BACKGROUND
Bus plays a major role in supporting the local and wider economy.
From March to September 2020, First Glasgow alone delivered approximately 20 million passenger journeys. Despite being 50% down from the previous year this number is a clear indicator of the volume of people reliant on/or choosing bus over other modes – at the same period rail and the Glasgow underground were estimated to be carrying 20% of its customers. Many of those travelling are in key worker roles and dependent on bus.
If future city plans do not address the key issues of congestion and the investment required to improve the road and technological infrastructure to deliver a successful and sustainable bus network for the future, it is feared people will choose to work, shop and enjoy leisure activities elsewhere.
When looking at some of the most successful and popular tourist cities in Europe, the one thing most have in common is an affordable, simple, connecting, punctual transport system. This is what Glasgow needs and now is the time to make it happen.
Despite the current climate, we are pleased Glasgow City Council continues to move forward with the delivery of its transport strategy and engage with the bus industry on this and the newly available Bus Partnership Fund – a Transport Scotland £500m funding stream which enables local authorities to work in partnership with bus operators, to develop and deliver ambitious transport schemes that incorporate bus priority measures whilst tackling climate emergency.
With this in mind, First Glasgow, McGills, Stagecoach West Scotland and Glasgow Citybus have come together to develop a vision for the future of bus in Glasgow and are reaching out to city businesses to collectively better understand the travel movements of city employees and their preferred transport choices.
The survey will not only provide information on bus, it will also gather statical information on all modes of travel into the city plus patterns on current and expected demand for retail and hospitality.
To reach people from across Glasgow – and to better understand travel and leisure movements – we are asking you to share our survey through your communication channels, targeting both customers and employees. Suggested social copy, survey and imagery attached.
Having multi-sector information will allow us to gauge travel movements, present a clearer picture of how people use the city now and in the future, plus provide a credible source of information when seeking political support and/or funding in these difficult times.
